Especially if it’s just going to be a day hike all you need is some comfortable clothes and a good pair of shoes. This article is going to give you a brief overview of the different types of hiking footwear that is available and what will be the best fit for you.

TYPES of Hiking Footwear

There are different types of hiking shoes for different activities from boots to sandals. They all serve their purposes each with their own pros and cons.

Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are going to be very sturdy, supportive and be great for long trips such as for backpacking. There are many models that are waterproof and some that are not.

Hiking Shoes

These will be similar to a hiking boot but have a lower cut and usually not have as much material in general. They will be lighter than a hiking boot, some will be waterproof, some will be water resistant.

Trail Runners

These will be very light in comparison to hiking shoes or boots. Think running shoes with an extra grippy and rugged bottom sole.

Sandals

Sandals are a great option for the afternoon hike on smooth easy going trials where you won’t be in danger of kicking any rocks. Lots of water on the hike or over swimming where there is a rocky bottom, sandals are a great option. Now the sandals we are talking about are the strap around the top and heel of your foot such as Chacos or Tevas.

SOCKS SOCKS SOCKS!

Socks are an important part of keeping your feet extra comfy in your new hiking footwear. The proper shoe with the proper sock will help prevent blisters and sore feet. Wool is great because it will keep your foot warm no matter if it’s dry or wet. Wool has moisture wicking properties which helps to keep your feet dry.
